LEGS UP THE WALL (Viparita Kerani)
Or
STONEHENGE (Savasana)
Improves energy and mental stamina Promotes blood supply & oxygen to the brain calms our nervous system. Focussed deep conscious breathing, changes our brain waves from beta to alpha. Which is a reflective restful brain state.
Helps circulation in your lower torso. Legs up the wall. encourages lymph flow.
Allows the back body to rest. Encourages the front body to open. And the back body to rest.
In legs up the wall, the gravitational force on the entirety of the spine shifts from vertical to horizontal.
Can alleviate mild headaches. The perfect opportunity for the head, neck and shoulders to completely relax.
Legs up the wall or Stonehenge coupled with conscious breathing, stimulates the parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system.
Either of these poses reduce compression in the abdomen. Improvesblood flow to the digestive organs, resulting in enhanced assimilation, digestion, and elimination.
If you live with menstrual pain, legs up the wall or Stonehenge, helps to relax the pelvic floor. Muscles relax blood supply increases.
Relieves pressure on the sciatic nerve By having the legs of the wall, we allow the gluteal musculature and piriformis to relax and lengthen. When these muscles are in a passive state they have less tension on the large sciatic nerve.
Alternate nostril breathing Nadi Shodhana
I will speak to 3 energy NADIS in our body. There may be more. They are part of our subtle body, “QUASI MATERIA”. An aspect of the human body, being neither solely physical nor solely spiritual.
- Left channel - IDA NADI
- Central channel - SUSHUMNA NADI
- Right channel - PINGALA NADI
Block right nostril, inhale left nostril
Block both nostrils hold
Keep left nostril blocked
Exhale right nostril
Inhale right nostril
Block both nostrils hold
Keep right nostril blocked
Exhale left nostril
Begin 6 3 6 RATIO
Continue to do so for 10 minutes.
Overtime you can work towards 4 7 8 RATIO.
Continuing to do so for 15 minutes etc.
Alternate nostril breathing removes stagnant energy from the NADIS.
As you can see, the time increases with the exhale. When we lengthen the exhale, we tap into the parasympathetic nervous system and alpha brain waves, encouraging a relaxed state. This state allows us to become more focussed and grounded preparing us to face the next step of our journey, bright eyed and fully present.
